20 militants held in Bangladesh

DHAKA: Bangladesh police arrested four members of an underground Islamist group, Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh and 16 other militants in a crackdown on Saturday Feb 21, a day after militants set off a grenade inside Gazipur police station, 30km north of Dhaka, wounding several people.

The JMB has been waging a campaign for the introduction of Sharia in the country.

The arrested militants were shown to journalists with weapons captured from them.

The crackdown signals Sheikh Hasina government’s resolve to fight Islamist terrorists in the country. Interior Minister Sahara Khatun asked people to form ‘local committees and cooperate with police by giving information about the movement of suspect people’

Dhaka is also coming down with heavy hand on Indian insurgent groups who have been enjoying sanctuaries on the Bangladesh soil for several years. One wanted ULFA leader Saikia is being repatriated to stand trial in India, local reports said.
