Ban on Sharif becoming PM removed

Nawaz Sharif can become Prime Minister of Pakistan once again under a latest apex court ruling.

The Supreme Court Monday overruled an earlier ruling that banned him from contesting ielections for ten -years.  The ban was a Musharraf era legacy.

The present Parliament’s term lasts till 2013.

Given the increasing unpopularity of President Asif Ali Zardari, the country may head for early mid-term elections. Sharif, who was prime minister twice in the 1990s, has built bridges of understanding with the Army and America.

Already the US has begun to see in Sharif a better alternative to President Asif Ali Zardari, who has become unpopular.

The timing of the poll will however depend on when and how the on-going military operation in Swat would end.
