Bangladesh, India to sign anti-terror agreement
Bangladesh and India will sign an agreement to combat international terrorism during the four-day visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Delhi from Jan 10.
Both countries currently have terrorism suspects wanted by the other in their jails, but lack a legal framework for prisoner exchange.
Several insurgent groups of India's north-east, particularly, ULFA- United Liberation Front of Assam - operate from the India-Bangladesh border. Leadership of some of these outfits, notably,ULFA, is based in Dhaka and has several business and real estate interests.
The proposed anti-terrorism agreement will formalise the extradition process between the two countries, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dipu Moni told reporters in Dhaka.h.
She said that the prisoner transfer deal would not cover Anup Chetia, an Ulfa leader, who has been held in Bangladesh since 1997 awaiting extradition.
