Jamat-e-Islami (JEI) has begun a campaign to mobilise public opinion against the Hasina government under the banner Jagrata Tauhidi Janata’.

On January 8, JEI organized (Jan 8) demonstrations at Barishal and Pabna. Anti-Govt demonstrations were also organized under various banners in Faridpur, Cox’s Bazaar, Bogra, Rajshahi and other places after the Jumma prayers.  Slogans were raised against Law Minister Shafiq Ahmed for his statement that subsequent to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the 5th Constitution Amendment all religion based political parties would be banned.  He was dubbed as ‘Murtad’ (non-believer).

At the Pabna meeting (Jan 8 ), JEI Amir Matiur Rahman Nizami gave a call for unity among all Islamic groups to ‘safeguard Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty’ which, he said, were ‘not safe’ in Awami League’s hand. He also called upon all ‘patriotic people’ to unitedly resist anti-Islamic conspiracies of ‘aggressive and hegemonistic power’.

At another meeting (Jan 9) organized in the Sathia Upazila, Nizami said that attempts to eliminate religion based political organizations were intended to undermine the country’s independence and sovereignty.
