ICS terror wave at Rajshahi University

Rajshahi is gaining prominence for all the wrong reasons these days. The JEI affiliated Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) is spreading its web across the city. And going by reports in the Daily Star, the ICS fortunes are on the upswing with the patronage of the local university authorities.

‘Shibir grows under teacher – admin care’ said the headline on Feb 11. The daily said: “The Rajshahi University Vice Chancellor Prof Abdus Sobhan and Assistant Proctor Mustaq Ahmed have distinct JEI links. Both of them have actually worked to help ICS gain upper hand and establish supremacy on the campus”.

Just three days earlier, on Feb 8 to be precise, the university campus was shocked by a gruesome killing of a student belonging to Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), affiliated to the ruling Awami League. His brutally battered body was found dumped in a manhole by the ICS cadres, who also cut off of hands of four other BCL workers.

Taking suo moto cognizance of the Daily Star report, the Bangladesh High Court has ticked off the government. ‘Explain why you should not be directed to form an inquiry commission to investigate the involvement of Rajshahi University administration in the gruesome killing’, the judges asked the government lawyers. They will report back to the bench after consulting the government.

HuT-B & HuT

A Shah Jalal University of Science and Technology student was arrested (Feb 9) while distributing Hizb-ut-Tahrir Bangladesh (HuT-B) leaflets on the campus. The university authorities have banned all campus activities of ‘Youth for Change’ backed by HuT-B.

Along with Hizb-ut-Tauhid (HuT), the HuT-B is conducting orientation courses, publication and symposiums to indoctrinate the youth.

Monirul Islam, Joint Convener of HuT-B told reporters that his organization would soon launch a massive movement in the country to establish Caliphate rule.

HuT which also preaches Caliphate rule and terms democracy as ‘law of the devil’ is getting organized across the country. The chief of this group Selim Panni has been bringing out several books and DVDs giving instigations to the people for launching Jehad to establish Caliphate rule in Bangladesh, according to a report in the New Nation on Feb 7.
