Kyrgyz, Tajik plan new offensive against Islamists

Kyrgyzstan’s Spiritual Directorate of Muslims is planning to set up a special body to counter extremist religious ideas and activities. The Directorate expressed concern over inflow of foreign funds which facilitated expansion of radical religious organisations such as Hizb-ut-Tahrir (HuT) and Tablighi Jamat (TJ).

Tajik Authorities have expressed concern over students going abroad to pursue Islamic education as they apprehend that they might return to their country with fundamentalist Islamic ideology.  The Tajik Culture Ministry is planning to introduce a registration scheme from September 2010 to give authorities adequate information regarding the nature of Islamic studies to be pursued abroad.  About 4000 Tajik students are believed to be studying in unofficial  eligious schools abroad, mainly in Pakistan, Iran and Arab countries.
