POREG VIEW:This flip-pop on on-arrival visa is not expressly targeted at India but reality is Indian tourists are the largest visitors (more than 83,500 in 2009) from a single country holidaying in the island. The facility was scrapped a day after Minister ofEconomic Development Basil Rajapaksa discussed with India minister for tourism in New Delhi ways to promoting tourism to his country. The on-arrival visa is a bait to attract tourists. It has nothing to do with reciprocity, as the Sri Lanka government claims. Though the ‘scrap on-arrival visa’ decision is kept on hold, the action shows that taking liberties with India has become a feature of Rajapaksa regime. Good neighbourly relations are never a one-way street. And are dotted with red lines, yellow lines and zebra crossings.
