INDIA
1. Nawa-i-Waqt editorial is critical of Maulana Fazlur Rahman’s address to his party workers where in he had said that they would hold dialogue with India and not wage a war, to free Kashmir. The daily says dialogues are successful where the parties are sincere in settling issues, but in this case, India only fools Pakistan in the name of dialogue. Edit states that India is continuing dialogues with Pakistan and at the same times calling Kashmir its integral part. Edit writes that despite knowing India’s cunning tricks, Pakistan has begun trade with India and is importing expensive electricity and petrol from India. Edit states that even Maulana Fazlur Rahman has not taken any effective steps to highlight the Kashmir issue at the international level or bring India to the table to settle the issue. The editorial cautions that resolving the Kashmir issue as soon as possible is vital since India is rapidly building dams over Pakistan’s rivers and controlling Pakistan’s water. It asks Fazlur Rehman what other option he has to settle Kashmir issue except through war. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

AFGHANISTAN
1. Nawa-i-Waqt’s editorial on including Pakistan and Afghanistan in the US – Taliban talks says: when the US began talks with the Taliban, it did not even think of including the two countries in the dialogue. Pakistan and Afghanistan should together decide on some joint strategy and bring the Taliban of both Pakistan and Afghanistan to the table to settle issues and target only American and NATO forces and force them to quit the region. The daily hopes that Pakistani Foreign Minister’s visit to Kabul will pave the way for improving Pak-Afghan relations.  (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

UNITED STATES
1. Jasarat edits says it seems that Pakistani leaders were eager to resume supply to NATO troops in Afghanistan since democratic leaders were not capable of tolerating American annoyance for long Pakistan was considered as a ‘shadow state’ in American media and people of Pakistan also feel that they are not liberated as the British had left but America had trapped them. Edit writes that American desires were fulfilled by Pakistani leaders and claims that India was also termed as MFN by the same elements. Edit writes that India has forcefully occupied Kashmir, killed lakhs of Kashmiris and dishonoured many women.  Edit writes that as per a conspiracy, Pakistan’s industries and factories were destroyed and if India is given the MFN status, then the situation will deteriorate further. Edit alleges that India has constructed dams on Pakistan’s waters with the intention of destroying Pakistani agriculture. Edit writes that Pakistan’s leaders try to appease America and states that on the issue of resumption of NATO supply, they should think twice since it will generate an enormous reaction in Pakistan. 2. Ummat and Jang editorially said though talks were between America and the Taliban, without the help of Pakistan it would not be possible for Allied Forces to safely pullout of Afghanistan. (Ummat Edit, Jang Edit)

DEFENCE
1. Gen (retd) Abdul Majid Malik said that talks with Taliban cannot succeed without the inclusion of Pakistan since the Taliban are inclined towards Pakistan. He said that India cannot be directly involved in talks with the Taliban. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
1. Addressing the Dafa-e-Pakistan Council, JuD chief Hafiz Saeed vowed to continue protests from the Dafa-e-Pakistan platform against aggression towards Pakistan, supplies to NATO and giving the MFN status to India. (Daily Pak)

2. Nawa-i-Waqt hails the Dafa-e-Pakistan Conference resolution not to bear USA. India and Israel’s aggression and warning against restoring supplies to NATO forces. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

3. Qari Muhammad Haneef Jalandhari writes in his column that anti-Islamist forces were targeting Madaris and they are doing it with the mindset that if they have to damage Islam and Muslims, they have to damage Madaris. Jalandhari writes that anti-Islam forces were targeting Madaris to protect their defeat as Madaris were the forte of Islam. Jalandhari said that the Federation of Arabic Madaris have decided to start a nationwide campaign and it began with the conference held in Jamia-Islamiya Rawalpindi in which Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Maulana Anwar-ul Haq and other major religious leaders were present. Jalandhari was also a speaker in that conference and demands readers to organize similar conferences in defence of religious Madaris. (Al Qalam Weekly, 27 January-2 February)

4. Muhammad Hussain Mehanti chief of JI (Karachi) said that the 12 February Dafa-e-Pakistan Council’s massive conference at Qaid-e-Azam Bagh will be a referendum against pro-American leaders and a sign of unity of the masses. He was speaking at the Noor-e-Haq Institution on the conference and leaders of JuD and JUI (F) were accompanying him. (Jasarat)

POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS
1. PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has decided to convene opposition parties’ conference for holding premature elections. (Jinnah, Nawa-i-Waqt)

2. Supreme Court has posted to February 9 the case of 11 under-trials taken into custody by intelligence agencies and now lodged at Idala jail. The SC directed that these under-trials be produced in court at the next hearing. Advocates representing ISI and MI (Military intelligence) told the court that out of 11 under trials, four have died, four are admitted to the Lady Reading hospital and the remaining three are at an examination centre in Chakwal. The judges were angry with this response. (Ibrat)

3. PTI leader Makhdoom Javed Hashmi told Khabrain (interview to Chief Editor Zia Shahid and editor Khabrain group and CEO News-5 Imtanan Shahid) said his party would form an alliance with   JI and likeminded parties in time for the general election. He said further that they are considering an alliance with the Dafe-e-Pakistan council as its views on several issues are similar to PTI’s. (Khabrain)

4. President of Tehreek -E -Tahafuz Adliya, Hashmat Advocate said that the Senate resolution, amendment in judges’ code of ethics, decision of November 3rd and 18th Amendment have paved the way for filing a case and taking action against Musharraf under Article 6. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

5. Rauf Nizzamani’s article in Awami Awaz says the two major political parties in country seem to have learnt that the Army has been able to usurp power only when political differences make things easy for them. Keeping this reality in mind, both the parties seem to have made a vow to keep off from confrontation against each other. (Awami Awaz)

6. Daily Dharti editorially said that the Masjid Committee system was very old but it should be reformed with great care and clean people should be made members for honest management. (Daily Dharti Edit)

7. Jang editorially said though the Government has agreed to fresh elections after the budget, it important that Pakistan should have free and fair elections. Democracy is not only for getting power but is a system to respect everyone’s rights. (Jang Edit)

ECONOMY-WATER- ENERGY
1. Ausaf edit on the first quarterly report of the State Bank of Pakistan says that 4.2% GDP growth target is difficult to achieve and the scarcity of gas, hiked oil prices and reduction in agricultural products in international markets are some of the important factors behind it.  The SBP report indicates that due to increased energy prices and weakened Pakistani rupee, inflation will increase in the coming months. Due to global recession the Pakistani economy is in very bad condition. (Ausaf Edit, 30 January)

2. Awami Awaz editorial says instead of burdening the common man with a hike in oil and petrol prices, the government should take other measures like meeting with tax recovery targets, economic reforms to contain budgetary deficit and bringing down government expenditure. Till all these things are done, inflation in country cannot be contained. (Awami Awaz Edit, 30 January)

SINDH
1. Speaking at Matli, Sindh United Party’s Jalal Mahmood Shah said inequality meted out to Sindh will be dealt with politically rather than through guns. He said his party wants to build a new Sindh and new Pakistan that protects the rights of all. (Ibrat)

2. Police Order introduced in the Musharraf era has been validated in Karachi, while the Police Act of 1861 will continue to be applicable for the rest of the 22 districts of Sindh. Sources say that this will mean two different police systems in Sindh, one for Karachi and another for Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpur Khas and Larkana divisions. (Kawish)

3. Abdul Wahab Munshi says in Awami Awaz that PPP will have to choose between power and Sindh. (Awami Awaz, 30 January)

4. Irbab Abdulmalik writes in Kawish that Sindh has woken up against the 20th Amendment bill presented in the National Assembly for more provinces. (Kawish)

5. Jasarat editorial laments at the fresh wave of target killings in Karachi. It noted that public protests are targetting public property and states that this trend can be dangerous; it suggests that those who want to protest should protest at the door of politicians. (Jasarat Edit)

6. Ibrat EDIT states that in this election year, the electorate in Sindh will have to take into account what their elected representatives have done for Sindhis in matters relating to job quotas. Edit writes that irony is that real issues are often sidelined and artificial ones are cooked up to distract people. Edit points out that job quota issue for Sindh’s interiors is no small matter and advises elected representatives not to ignore the issue. (Ibrat Edit)

7. Kawish editorially demands that the commissionerate system be applied to Sindh’s local body system without bringing political reconciliation into the picture. (Kawish Edit)

BALOCHISTAN
1. Daily Intekhab’s edit on Balochistan problem says consolidated efforts are required to address the issues and that elections alone would not serve any purpose. (Daily Intekhab Edit)

POK NEWS
1. PM of AJK Abdul Majid said that print and electronic media speed up jihad through the pen in support of the Kashmir liberation movement. He demanded that they expose the dangerous face of India in front of the world community. (Ausaf, 30 January)

2. Chief Secretary of Punjab, Nasir Mehmood Khosa has given instructions to build a Kashmir Center in Lahore as soon as possible. He said that Punjab wanted to strengthen its relations with Kashmiris. (Daily Pak)

3. Former chairman of PPP Bradford, Raja Khalid Farooque has been appointed as the political coordinator of the PM of AJK Abdul Majid. (Ausaf, 30 January)

1. WASA workers in Gilgit Baltistan have not received salaries for months and hence they are facing difficulties. (Ausaf, 30 January)

2. A village in a suburb of Gilgit City was deprived of basic amenities like roads, water filtration plants, educational institutions and dispensaries. (Ausaf, 30 January)

3. Addressing party workers in Sehnsa, Raja Farooq Haider Khan, Opposition leader in AJK, said that the government was looting and discriminating against the opposition. He alleged that nepotism and corruption was at the height and nobody had respect for law. He added that they will start a campaign against corruption which will start from Sehnsa. 4. GB chief minister Syed Mehdi Shah is likely to make important announcements at the cabinet meeting today. (Baad-e-Shimal)

5. Talking to the media, AJK minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Syed Azhar Gilani Advocate, said that 8 seats will be increased in the Kashmir Council through the 12th Amendment. He said that seats reserved for women in the AJK assembly will be increased from 5 to 6 (Baad-e-Shimal)

6. A landslide in Nala Hawal is threatening more disaster than caused by the Atabad Lake. (Baad-e-Shimal)

7. Baad-e-Shimal’s editorial on CM Mehdi Shah’s promises to offer jobs to graduates and solve public issues, says that no effective steps have been taken yet by the government. GB is the best tourist spot, and if the government develops tourism it will provide ample job opportunities. Paying attention to mineral reserves and hydel power will yield good job opportunities and boost incomes and there will be no need to beg for funds from the federal government. (Baad-e-Shimal Edit)
