Pak Urdu Media Digest- July 14

Ummat reports that three former army generals have been summoned for questioning in a mega scandal. The report highlights that army has not escaped corruption which is endemic in Pakistan. The anti-America tirade led by JI is taking a new direction. Its July 15th rally will focus on inflation as well. This campaign coincides with ‘Defence of Pakistan Movement’ being launched by JuD in collaboration with the Ulemas, who will be touring the country to spread the message.

UNITED STATES
1.America is exerting pressure on Pakistan to release Dr. Shakeel Afridi who had carried out a fake vaccination campaign to identify the DNA Osama Bin Laden from a family member at the house in Abbottabad, reports the British daily, Guardian.  (Urdupoint)

2.JI Chief Sayyed Munawar Hasan said that the JI’s protest on 15th July at Gujranwala will give a new direction to the ‘Go America -Go’ movement. Lakhs of people will participate in the rally which is a protest against American-led drone attacks and inflation, he said. (Jasarat)

3.Khalid Lodhi writes Nawa-i-Waqt that Pakistan should not under any circumstances make a deal with the U.S. over its nuclear program in exchange for American aid. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

AFGHANISTAN

1.Al-Qaeda and Afghan Taliban Chiefs Aiman Al-Zawhiri and Mullah Omar are hiding in Quetta or Waziristan, says Afghan National Security Directorate Chief, Lutfullah Mishal. (Jang)

1.Pakistan will send its first Information Satellite into space from China. (Jang)

INDIA
1.The latest Mumbai blasts have taken place when there are only 15 days left for the next round of Indo-Pak talks. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

ARMY
1.Three former army officials, Lt. Gen. (r) Afzal Muzaffar, Lt. Gen. (r) Khalid Munir Khan, and Maj. Gen. Khalid Zaheer Akhtar have been summoned for questioning in the NLC corruption case. (Ummat)

2.On his visit to the Mohmand Agency, COAS Kayani asked the tribals to help the Army in restoring peace in the region. (Jasarat, Urdupoint)

POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS
1.Federal, provincial, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan government officials have been warned not to pass any information related to government matters to the media. The order was issued as leaked information has defamed the government. (Khabrain)

2.Jasarat in its edit on Transparency International Pakistan’s report says:  PPP has caused a loss of Rs.30 trillion in the last 3 years to the exchequer in some department, according to TI revelations. Instead of a mere denial, the government should come clean before it faces general elections. (Jasarat Edit)

3.Pakistan’s military bureaucracy had taken control of Afghanistan with the help of Taliban and Al Qaeda at one point in time and also kept meddling in the affairs of India with help of the Mujahideens. All these three elements have now infiltrated Karachi after the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and they are engaging in extortion, kidnapping and land grabbing. 4.Editorial in Nawa-i-Waqt highlights the importance of building the Kalabagh Dam and says “If the ANP wants to be stripped of the Pro-India label then it should not only prove that it is not taking Rs.6 billion from India but should also stop criticizing the construction of Kalabagh dam and take active part in its construction. TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
1.Addressing the Defence of Pakistan Ulema Convention organized by JuD, leading Ulemas welcomed the withdrawal of aid by the U.S. and said that the U.S. wants to avenge its defeat in Afghanistan by attacking Pakistan. They said religious parties will organise ‘Defence of Pakistan Movement’ by going around the country. (Daily Pak)

WATER & ENERGY
1.Authorities have decided to increase power tariff by Rs.5 to recover Pak-Iran gas pipeline expenses. The pipeline will be 800km long, extending from Makran to Nawabshah. (Ummat)

BALOCHISTAN

1.Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that elements torching the national flag in Balochistan are the enemies of the future generation of Pakistanis and need not expect any leniency. (Ibrat)

2.The Federal government has decided to set up an enquiry commission under the Supreme

1.Editorial in Daily Intekhab has expressed anguish over the death of 61 people in North Waziristan in American drone attack and asked the government to reject US pressure to fight its war on terror. (Daily Intekhab Edit)

PUNJAB

1.Lahore High Court’s Bar Association has passed a unanimous resolution asking the government to declare the American diplomat as persona non grata and expel him from Pakistan. (Kawish)

SINDH
1.Army has warned the PPP not to use force against the MQM in Sindh; the army is opposing the appointment of Zulfikar Mirza in the Central and Sindh cabinet. (Jasarat, Urdupoint)

2.Ibrat columnist Aajiz Jamali writes; “Some graffiti have appeared on Karachi walls calling for a separate Mohajir province. This demand reflects a very dangerous mindset in Sindh. It is surprising that the media has not taken up this issue with requisite seriousness. Even the Sindh nationalist groups haven’t been very vocal in their criticism of the demand.  PPP’s silence on the issue is incomprehensible’. (Ibrat)

3.Sindh Assembly’s Acting Speaker Shaila Raza said that the MQM cannot be allotted seats on the opposition benches till their resignations are accepted by the governor. (Kawish)

1.Governor of the State Bank Shahid Hafeez Karadar has resigned as he had serious differences with the government on issues like non-adherence to monetary policy, extending excessive loans, and also on printing of more currency notes. (Kawish)

POK NEWS

2.PPP leadership has decided to include two PML-Q legislators in the G-B cabinet. They are Mirza Hussain and Bashir Ahmed Khan. Chief Minister Mehdi Shah will meet President Zardari to decide whether to increase the cabinet size or to dismiss two ministers to accommodate PML-Q. Bashir Ahmed Khan said he would prefer to remain in the opposition if the PML-Q is offered only one ministerial berth. (Baad-e-Shimal)

3.G-B government has decided to start a major project to provide more facilities to the public and make Gilgit city a model city at a cost of over  Pakistan Rupees One billion. (Baad-e-Shimal)

4.People of Jotal are deprived of drinking water and they are depending on water from polluted rivers, according to General Secretary of the School and Health Committee. This is causing various diseases in the area. (Ausaf, 13 July)

5.An eminent citizen of Daryal Tanghir (Gilgit-Baltistan) has demanded district-status to Daryal Tanghir and inclusion of areas like Dodoshal and Khaneri in the new district. In 1952, the people of Daryal Tanghir had willingly agreed to join Gilgit-Baltistan, he recalled. (Ausaf, 13 July)
