Stand off with the US over NATO attack and fast paced changes in the political theater are the main focus of the dailies. This report includes material of Dec 28 also

INDIA
1. Raja Ali Zaman, Central leader of PML-N, AJK, said while speaking at a dinner hosted by Chaudhary Munir Ahmed in the UK, that the father of nation Muhammad Ali Jinnah had called Kashmir the jugular vein of Pakistan. He said that Jinnah understood the biased attitude of Indians and hence Jinnah demanded a separate nation but today PPP was giving the MFN status to India. He thanked the Pakistani and Kashmiri community of UK for their efforts due to which MP Steve Baker raised the Kashmir issue in the UK parliament. (Ausaf, 28 December)

2. Former PM of AJK and opposition leader Raja Farooq Haider said that the government should confess its failure for not arresting her murderers. He said that the remains of Musharraf era have thrown the Kashmir issue into cold storage and stated that Kashmir movement was being damaged by giving India the MFN status. Farooq alleged that the Indian Army was behind the genocide of a new generation of Kashmiris and even international community was mum.  He advised people to boycott PTI rallies. (Ausaf, 28 December)

3. Nawa-i-Waqt is critical of CBMs with India. Its editorial says India has collected the latest weapons to overpower Pakistan, and that as such Pakistan is not in a position to defend itself using conventional weapons. Pakistan has to balance this inequality through nuclear technology. Edit states that as per US agenda, Musharraf and his government enhanced relations with India, and using this India and the US created a conspiracy to foil Pakistan’s nuclear ability. Pakistan cannot afford to exchange nuclear information with India. Edit expresses concern that Pakistan has agreed to share information on its ballistic missile with India whereas India refuses to share information on its cruise missile. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

UNITED STATES/CHINA
1. US has ordered the recall of defence goods still stuck in Pakistan. The material includes huge trucks, special weapons, vehicles to carry anti-aircraft guns, and jammer vehicles. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

2. Ausaf Edit is on a statement of the special envoy of President of China that Beijing supports the efforts of Pakistan to ensure its sovereignty. China wanted Pakistan to become a powerful nation and stand on its own feet but that Pakistan’s leaders kept depending on aid and American assistance. (Ausaf Edit, 28 December)

3. Al Qalam Weekly edit on Pak-US stand off over the NATO attack says various NATO and American officials have tried to give an impression that they regret the incident but they will not apologies to Pakistan. Till America does not tender apology Pakistan should not cooperate with NATO or American forces in Afghanistan. (Al Qalam Weekly Edit, 23-29 December)

DEFENCE

Ali Nawaz Bitt writes that the establishment is worried about who would succeed PPP. Whoever got the most funds from the US would rule the country. He writes that there are two sources of income for the establishment-  loot of oppressed provinces like Sindh and Balochistan and aid from the US. The writer believes that for the time being, the establishment will lie low. (Awami Awaz, 28 December)

TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
1. PML-N chairman, Raja Zafar-ul Haq has stated that Pakistan is based on Islam and the two nation theory. He stated that Pakistan will survive on the basis of Islam and democracy; dividing Pakistan into nationalism will weaken Pakistan. To a question he replied that the Middle East has seen Egypt, Greece, Iran, British and French establishments but not seen the Brahmin establishment which Pakistan has experienced. He said that Pakistan will save the Middle East from the Brahmin establishment. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

2. All religious parties in Pakistan have announced that the Difa-e-Pakistan Council’s conference will be held on January 15th. (Baad-e-Shimal)

POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS
1.Close friends of Pakistan, China, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, are playing an important role in back door diplomacy to defuse conflicts between the government and the army over Memogate. These countries are advising the political and military leaderships to avoid confrontation. (Jasarat, Ibrat, Jinnah)

2. Central Majlis-e-Shura of JI has expressed concerns on the Memogate controversy and termed it the worst political crisis. The Memogate was not only a conspiracy against the Army but also a serious betrayal of national security. The Shura demanded an investigation by Supreme Court and punishment to those involved. (Jasarat)

3. Akash Santorai writes that due to continuing tensions in country, between the Army and the government, the issues of the common man has been relegated to the sidelines. (Ibrat)

4. Jasarat says President Asif Ali Zardari challenged the Chief Justice of Supreme Court during his speech at Garhi Khuda Bux to show that he is not afraid, and writes that Zardari referred to CJP because of the Memogate case. Edit writes that Zardari tried to hide his fear by projecting himself as fearless. (Jasarat Edit)

5. Ausaf EDIT on govt response submitted in the Supreme Court with regard to Memogate, says Memogate is an unprecedented issue and it should be dealt by court and states that Pakistan’s judiciary was independent where nobody’s rights would be taken away. (Ausaf Edit, 28 December)

6. EDIT writes that the parliament needs to be saved in order to save Pakistan. Until the problems of the Baloch people are solved, there will be clouds over Pakistan. (Awami Awaz Edit, 28 December)

7.Edits in Daily Intekhab and, Jang say President Asif Ali Zardari delivered a very balanced speech in Garhi Khuda Bux on the 4th death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto. Zardari made it clear that the
government had no interest in confrontation with any department but at the same time would not hesitate to assert its rights and privileges. The main thrust of the speech was on foreign policy  
particularly relations with the US which have of late deteriorated.  Edit goes on to state that American policies have failed and America could again try to revert to its old policy to ram
righteous extremist religious groups but Pakistan’s leadership has many new options to keep things in control and President Zardari has supported the position of the government by expressing the

8. EDIT is critical of the contradiction in the PM and Interior ministers’ statements regarding an inquiry into Gen. Pasha’s London visit. Edit writes that the PM had said that the inquiry is taking place, and Rehman Malik had denied it, later the PM house clarified that PM’s statement was wrongly construed. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

9. Hamid Mir in his column writes on President Zardari’s speech in Garhi Khuda Bux. He states if he could not do anything against the Benazir killers, he should at least disclose their names. (Jang)

10.   PML-N Central Secretary for Information Senator Mushahid Ullah Khan confirmed that dialogue is underway with PML-Q on the formation of an alliance and if PML-Q separated from government, then an alliance is possible. (Jasarat)

11. JUI-F’s Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri announced a million March on 27th January. (Jinnah)

 ECONOMY-WATER- ENERGY
1. IMF’s new emissary refuses to visit Pakistan because of security apprehensions. (Kawish)

2. A Chinese company would be given the contract for desalination and dehydration of the gas obtained from the Thar Coal Project. (Jang)

SINDH

1. Controversial PPP leader and former Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza has claimed that the President and PM have agreed with what he had said about MQM and Altaf Hussain. (Awami Awaz)

2. Sindh Governor Ishrat Alabad, has completed 9 years in his post. (Awami Awaz, Nawa-i-Waqt)

3. The Sindh Home Minister, taking note of sectarian target killings has asked the Sindh police chief to be in touch with religious scholars of all sects and take them in confidence for strict action against those disturbing law and order conditions. (Kawish)

POK NEWS
1. A Committee was formed at Jammu and Kashmir Students Liberation Front meeting held in Bhambar for organizing SLF throughout the district. Speakers including Convener Raja Imran and Secretary Imran Beg said that the goal was to restore the political and geographical unity of Kashmir that was there at the time of partition in August 1947 and the formation of an autonomous democratic government, free of sectarian differences. 1. Machinery from China has reached Sosat, which was sent to expand the spillway at Attabad Lake. (Baad-e-Shimal)

2. Bagh district hospital has been deserted and medicines are unavailable. The ambulances are being taxed and patients have to purchase syringes. The patients are not getting drinking water in hospital premises. People are going to Rawalakot and Peshawar for treatment.  (Ausaf, 28 December)
