Major story of the day is the worsening relations between the US and Pakistan. Many edits and commentaries have examined ifs and buts while noting that the government is shoring up support from China, Iran and Saudi Arabia. SAUDI ARBIA
1. ISI chief Ahmed Shuja Pasha has set out on an emergency trip to Saudi Arabia. The objective of visit was to take Saudi Arabian authorities in to confidence. Pasha is accompanied by a high level military delegation. The decision to send Pasha to Saudi Arabia was taken by COAS Gen Kayani after the corps commander conference. Pakistan will also take UAE, Iran, China, UK, Turkey and Sri Lankan into confidence on its firm stand against US allegations. (Jasarat/Khabrain/Nawa-i-Waqt/Ummat)

2. A joint military exercise of Saudi Arabian and Pakistani troops has begun in Jhelum. Inspector Gen. Training Lt Gen Muzammal Hussain inaugurated the exercises.  (Jinnah/Nawa-i-Waqt/Jasarat)

IRAN
1. The Iranian ambassador to Pakistan, Shakiri said that Iran will always support Pakistan in its time of need. He said that taking gas from Iran is in Pakistan’s own interest and Pakistan should not be pressurized. He said that Iran’s Interior Minister and Communication Minister will be arriving in Pakistan on September 28 for talks on the subject. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

CHINA
1. Nawa-i-Waqt edit on Chinese Deputy PM ‘s visit to Pakistan says: He has specially come to Pakistan at a time when the US is threatening Pakistan, to convey the message that China will not leave us alone in these testing times. Even when Musharraf submitted to the US call, Sino-Pak relations had remained unaffected. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

AFGHANISTAN
1…Afghanistan has alleged that Pakistan has fired hundreds of rockets targeting its border villages in Kunnar and Nuristan provinces. Many people died in the shelling and two mosques have been destroyed. (Urdu Point/Nawa-i-Waqt/Jinnah)

2. Security has been beefed up at the Chaman Border and the situation is monitored by NATO planes, which are making aerial surveillance. (Ummat)

3. Former Chief of ISI Gen (r) Hamid Gul said that it is good for Pakistan that Afghans have suppressed America so much that it is not in a position to attack Pakistan. “Yet, America could make the mistake of attacking Pakistan and we should be ready for the answer. China, which is powerful enough to defeat America even without war in a very short period, is worried as to why Pakistani leadership is not ready for development despite its support. ….Assassins of Ahmad Shah Masood and Burhanuddin Rabbani had a common motive ….India and Israel will also suffer in case of an American attack on Pakistan”. UNITED STATES
1. US State Department has prepared a charge sheet against Pakistan in order to include it in the list of terrorist countries, a highly reliable diplomatic source said. The CIA has red marked over 300 areas as safe shelters of terrorists in Pakistan. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

2. US may carry out attacks via Afghanistan and air strikes in North Waziristan whereas India is considering surgical operations in Pakistan to achieve its goals, sources said adding that the Americans and Indians are in touch with each other for joint action against Pakistan. Sources claimed that there was escalating tension between India and Pakistan and now the US administration wanted to pressurize Pakistan to attain results in the Afghan war. Pakistan’s security organizations have closely reviewed existing conditions. Sources said the. (Khabrain)

3. JUI (F) Central Secretary Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari said that America should not consider Pakistan as another Afghanistan. He warned that if America repeated its mistakes like invading Afghanistan, it would have dangerous consequences. He stated that the entire Pakistan will stand up as one person against America. 4. JUI (F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that America had suffered a defeat in Afghanistan and therefore it would not open up another front in the region. (Jasarat/Kawish)

5. Shahi Syed of the ANP says Pakistan will have to step up its action on terror threats though he wonders what prevents the US from holding talks with Pakistan to resolve its differences. “If they can have talks with the Taliban with whom they have been at war for years, can’t they  hold talks with their steady ally Pakistan to iron out differences?. The US should show ‘respect’ to the resolutions passed in the Pakistan Parliament”. (Ibrat)

6. Governor of Punjab, Sardar Latif Khan said that Pakistan was not Afghanistan or Iraq and warned that if America attacks… it would get a fitting response. On its own, Pakistan doesn’t want relations with America to reach to a point from where it could not return to normalcy. (Jasarat/Kawish)

7. Ghanvi Bhutto, Chairperson of PPP (Shaheed Bhutto) has extended her support to the Army taking a tough stand against US allegations. (Awami Awaz)

8. Haqqani Network has been answering threats by carrying out attacks and America would put lives of 1 lakh American soldiers in danger if it attacks Pakistan. (Ummat)

9. Jang editorial on ‘fickle’ nature of US partnership urges India and Afghanistan to remember that the US would leave the region soon, but India, Afghanistan and Pakistan will remain neighbours and they will have to continue to deal with each other. (Jang Edit)

10. Ibrat editorial has asked Pakistan leadership not to rush into extreme positions vis-à-vis the US, like in the past. (Ibrat Edit)

1. Jasarat has welcomed the tough response to American allegations that Pakistan had links with the Haqqani Network. The nation is united against American threats; Pakistan should firmly face America to live with dignity. (Jasarat Edit)

INDIA
1. Maulana Sanaullah Siyalkoti, Shaoib Ahmed Mirpur, Muhammad Sadique, Maulana Ibrahim, Chaudhary Shaukat Ali and other leaders of central Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadith (UK) have congratulated British MP Steven Baker for raising the Kashmir issue in the House of Commons. They said that British MPs have boosted the morale of Kashmiris who expect that the MPs will succeed in facilitating their right to self determination. (Ausaf, 26 September)

2. American and Indian media have once again started negative propaganda against Pakistan’s atomic program and proliferation and were claiming that Dr. AQ Khan was in contact with Libya for exporting atomic technology. (Jang)

3. Indian emissaries all over the world were taking advantage of the situation to do anti-Pakistan propaganda and were actively urging Japanese leadership to implement sanctions against Pakistan. (Jang)

INDIA –WATER
1. Ausaf editorial refers to the interim order of the International Court of Arbitration on Kishenganga dam. ‘India is not only fighting against Pakistan on ideological and geographical fronts but also destroying water to ruin Pakistan’s soil. Indian fanatics are spreading poison in the minds of the youth against Pakistan and India is creating instability in Pakistan by sitting in Afghanistan. Islamabad should raise the issue of Indian water aggression at international platforms strongly. (Ausaf Edit, 26 September)

2. Jinnah edit accuses India of violating the Sindh Basin water treaty. “As per the treaty, India was to release 56,000 cusec water daily from the Chenab River but India violated the treaty by releasing only 20,000 cusec of water daily. Some weeks ago, the water in the Chenab was more than 1 lakh cusec, but not so anymore. Whenever India wishes, it blocks the water; at the same time it also releases the water according to its whims to destroy Pakistani agriculture. Hence Pakistan should raise the water issue in international courts in an effective manner. It is time to consider constructing non-controversial dams to combat water crises in future. (Jinnah Edit)

3. Qurban Baloch’s column on water issue says:  PM is vigilant enough to protect Pakistan’s interests with regards to water and has set up ‘Pakistan Trans-boundary Water Organisation’. Headed by the PM’s assistant Kamal Majeed, it this new body will monitor India’s projects coming up on Jhelum so that Pakistan’s water interests can be protected. Indus Water Commission will now report to the new forum any violations by India with regards to the water treaty. In turn, the new organisation will not only report all these violations to the government but will also move world bodies against India.   (Kawish) 

DEFENCE
1. Senate’s Standing Committee on Defence will discuss today the escalated tension between America and Pakistan. Chairman of committee, Gen Javed Ashraf, who is a former ISI chief, will chair the meeting to be held at the Parliament House. Foreign and defence secretaries and ISI officials have been called in for a briefing. Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar has also been specially invited for the meeting. (Jasarat)

2. Admiral Nauman Bashir’s term as Navy chief would end on 8th October 2011; those in the race to succeed him are Vice Admiral Tayyab Ali Dogar, Vice Admiral Abbas Raza, Vice Admiral Tanveer and Vice Admiral Asif Sandel. (Jinnah)

3. Air Marshall (Retd) Shahid Zulfiqar said that Pakistan’s Air Force was prepared for an American challenge and this time it would be difficult for the traitor to jam Pakistani radars. Air Vice Marshall (r) Muhammad Anwar Khan said that there was no threat of a clash between the US and Pakistan though tensions would continue for some time. (Ummat)

TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
1. Um-e-Salman writes that Muslims have lost their place in the world because they were not following the Holy Quran. He states that most people don’t believe in Jihad and those who believe are too busy in their lives. Supporters of Jihad should help Mujahedeen and should also take part in Jihad practically. He claims that only then Kafirs will be defeated. (Al Qalam Weekly, 23-29 September)

2. A French news agency has claimed that despite extreme pressure from America, Pakistan would not start any operations against the Haqqani Network. A Pakistani security official confirmed that they had no such intention. (Jang)

POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS 
1. U.S has begun contacting other political parties including PML (N) in Pakistan after escalating tension between the two countries. The US political Consul in Pakistan met PML (N) leaders, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Raja Zafer-ul-Haq on Monday. (Daily Pak)

2. Khabrain editorially called for an APC to unite Pakistan’s community, government and defence organisations on single platform to counter US allegations against the country.  (Khabrain Edit)

KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWAH (NWFP/FATA)
1. Khyber Pakhtunkhwah assembly has passed a resolution asking the federal government to summon American diplomats for telling them of the national sentiments and mood. (Awami)

SINDH
1. Jiye Sindh Quami Mahaz Chief Bashir Qureshi said while Sindhis are not being allowed to keep arms legally, terrorists are given a free hand in Sindh. He said Karachi belongs to Sindhis and they will have to be ready to make sacrifices. (Ibrat) 

2. Flood aid received at Kunri village is either being kept in godowns or distributed to a chosen few. Sindh Taraqi Pasand, Jiye Sindh Quami Mahaz, Sindh Itihad and other Sindh nationalist groups have protested at the practice; they also demanded that accumulated rain water should be drained out immediately. 3. Land mafia in the Sindh is controlling 50,000 acres of government land, Chief Minister admitted and has pledged that the land would be taken back by invoking anti-encroachment laws. (Jasarat/Awami Awaz)

4. Hundreds of Pinjo Bagdis (a Hindu tribe) have protested on the streets of Larkana against the authorities’ failure to nab the killers of a 10 –year- old girl belonging to the tribe.  The agitators also set tyres on fire on the roads and blocked traffic for over 10 hours. (Awami Awaz)

POK NEWS
1. Kashmir Hurriyat leader Mir Waiz Omar Farooq said Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry’s visit to Srinagar has had a positive impact on the Kashmir problem and such meetings should continue between cross-border political leadership to help resolving Kashmir issue. (Daily Dharti)

2. PM AJK Chaudhary Abdul Majeed said that a Dry Port would be constructed and the closed Airport in AJK would be reopened. (Daily Dharti)

G-B NEWS
1. Baad-e-Shimal editorially expressed concern over the situation in Hunza district where political and student organisations held a protest demonstration yesterday. It says: Even the peace committee is planning a long march against mass arrests. People of Hunza and Gojal are peace loving people but if they are targeted then one cannot expect them to take it lying down. (Baad-e-Shimal Edit) 

2. The GB chief minister, Mehdi Shah, met China’s deputy PM at a dinner hosted in his honour. Shah invited him to visit GB, which he has accepted. Shah thanked him for China’s help, especially in building the Karakoram highway. (Baad-e-Shimal)
