A U.S. missile on Friday hit what is purported to be a Taliban communication center in Painda Khel region of South Waziristan, killing at least three people and wounding three others.

It was fifth such attack in two weeks in search of Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud.

A Pakistan daily quoting military sources said Mehsud was seriously injured in the attack but a London Times report said he had escaped

Also on Friday, two clashes left at least 20 militants and security forces dead in the Bajur region, an area that the army in March had claimed to have cleared of insurgents.

Taliban fighters ambushed an army convoy Friday afternoon in Bajur's Charmang Valley, said local government officials.Four insurgents and two soldiers were killed.

Two hours later, the military pounded the area with helicopter gunships and artillery, killing 10 more militants.

Earlier, dozens of militants overran a police post and killed four officers in Khar, Bajur's main town
