Pakistan has turned to its all-weather friend to secure what the USA has denied to it in terms of N-parity with its South Asian nuclear neighbour. And the Chashma complex is China’s first nuclear energy plant project abroad, and CNNC cast it as a launching pad for expanding into the global market.

His theme is always brief: hate and anger towards the US, the West and India, not always in that order. He has appeared on all major US TV channels and the BBC more than once and almost every month one or two leading newspapers in the West publish interviews with him. The media in Pakistan has never shown veneration towards him but today it dutifully keeps the readers posted up-to-date with Musharraf speak....

The number of registered religious schools in Pakistan stands at 10,973. Success of Madressah reform hinges on syllabus and integration with the mainstream school education. On both counts, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Shah does not hold out any hope. ...

ISI is a part of the army and reports to the army chief. Many heads of ISI have gone on to become army chiefs. Present army chief Pervez Kayani was heading the ISI just before his elevation. And the ISI chief of the day, Lt Gen Pasha, is Kayani’s close confidant and has been rewarded with an extension. So much so projecting the ISI alone as the fall guy is no more than a good academic exercise. It doesn’t whitewash the reality that there is a second front in the war on terror in the heart of Pakistan's security forces....

Judge Shahid Raffique’s order that former President Musharraf's property be seized and his bank accounts frozen in connection with the case concerning the assassination of Benazir Bhutto demonstrates that all is not lost in Pakistan and the long arm of law, if it so wishes, is capable of catching the wanted by his shirt collar....

Most of the violence in Karachi is on account of turf wars between leaders and activists of the PPP, MQM, and the ANP, who have aligned themselves with slum landlords, drug barons and gun-runners in their competition for land, political influence and control of the ‘protection racket’. There is a Kashmir angle to the Karachi violence as well..Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has reasons to worry about Karachi since the city is home to the Mehran base of the Navy, which was attacked by Taliban in May. But Gen Kayani sees risk in taking up 'assignment Karachi'....

It is a sign of insanity to keep repeating the same mistakes over and over again, expecting different results. It is high time for Pakistan to redefine its spending priorities in favour of ordinary citizens. If that is done, the Holy month of Ramadan will bring up a different face of Pakistan; at present the month of fasting associated with charity sees people from the low strata flock to the cities and towns looking for alms....

Put simply, Pakistan’s message to its Kashmir lobby is let the continuity in status quo remain undisturbed and let your wishes and your right to self-determination be pipe-dreams, for the present. Contentious issues like Siachen and Sir Creek may not find a passing reference. Some CBMs will find mention, however because Pakistan needs some talking points at the end of the day. ...

The Haqqanis belong to Zadran tribe, which are mostly based in Paktia and Khost provinces of Eastern Afghanistan. However, their support base has always been in the FATA's Northern Waziristan, where they run a number of Madrassas and training camps but operate mainly in South-Eastern Afghanistan, and provinces further North towards Kabul. The dreaded network is reportedly preparing for alternative safe haven for itself in Kurram Agency. Pakistan army holds the Haqqani Network, like the Taliban, as its reserve asset for the endgame in Afghanistan....

The turn of events show that Pakistan’s assumption that having fooled the US on Indian fears they can take the Americans for a ride indefinitely are going wrong. Clearly, the all-powerful ‘in-house’ presiding deity overstepped when it became more audacious, arresting US diplomats, expelling military trainers and generating a virulent anti-US atmosphere in the country where radicalism in any case has taken deep roots. ...
