Suicide bombs kill 50 in Pakistan

Up to 50 people have been killed in a fresh series of suicide bombings in southern Pakistan by Taliban and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

On Sunday April 18 morning, a suicide bomber killed seven people and wounded another 26 when he rammed a truck loaded with explosives into a police station in the town of Billitung, in the Kohat region on the border with Afghanistan. The vehicle was carrying around 250 kg of explosives, according to police, who believe that the Tehereek-i-Taliban Pakistan, TTP, is behind the attack.

Two suicide attacks in the neighbouring town of Kohat on Saturday (Apr 17) killed 41 refugees from the Orakzai tribal area as they were queuing to register for food and relief supplies.

The bombers were men disguised in burqas; they struck within minutes of each other, with the second blast the bigger and more deadly. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Al-Aalmigroup, a militant Sunni Muslim outfit claimed that it has carried out the attacks against the Shia minority.

The Billitung blast damaged the wall of the police station and destroyed several neighbouring shops.

The United Nations said it was temporarily suspending work helping displaced people in Kohat and neighbouring Hangu as a result of the attack.
