This picture is a telling commentary on the state of public transport in Pakistan. It appeared in The News International today, June 8, 2016. For the policy planners, this crowded mini-bus with passengers hanging like swarm of bees tells the distance that needs to be covered.
Public transport is neglected in entire South Asia; Pakistan is no exception. Where it falters is that while others are trying to put correctives in place to make travel a less hazardous enterprise, Pakistan has allowed itself to be bogged down in debates that are neither here nor there, like, for instance, whether a man can beat his wife lightly.
