RUSSIA/UZBEKISTAN
1. Ghulam Jilani Khan writes Uzbekistan’s plan to bar by law any foreign military base in the country will have direct and indirect impacts on Pakistan. He states that Uzbeks have close linguist and ethnic ties with Afghans and during the Taliban regime a large number of Uzbeks were included in the Northern Alliance militia. He writes that India and Uzbekistan have maintained good friendly relations and India by way of aid has established a strong influence there. He states that Uzbek pirates have carried out attacks against Pakistan’s security forces in the past in Dir and Bajaur, entering Pakistan via Afghanistan. He writes that according to sociological studies, people from landlocked areas tend to be extremists and that is what people from Uzbekistan are. Gilani cites the example of Mullah Fazlullah. These Uzbeks are supported by India and the US in their criminal activities and are also provided with weapons and technical training. He states that Uzbeks and Tajiks entered FATA via Afghanistan and supported Taliban and gave them training in suicide attacks. Gilani writes that since Pakistan has banned carrying lethal and sensitive goods by NATO forces via Pakistan, the US might consider Uzbekistan as an alternative. (Daily Pak)

Edit questions whether a new political line is being adopted or has Pakistan realized that it has gained nothing by aligning with America. Policy to make friends is good, the daily says and observes that Pakistan should also make good ties with India, Iran, Afghanistan and Middle Eastern countries. India should be convinced that only Kashmir was a dispute between two countries and if that issue was resolved there is no other hindrance in improving bilateral ties. (Ausaf Edit)

UNITED STATES
1. Abdul Hafiz Amirpuri writes in his column that Pakistan has two demands to resume NATO supply -an apology on the Salala incident and stopping drone attacks. Cunningly America betrayed Pakistan. The apology was cleverly worded; as far as the drone attacks were concerned, America said that Pakistani leadership will be taken into confidence and if it will have suspicion of presence of militants it will also inform Pakistan’s leadership but the day Pakistan resumed the NATO supply, America hit a drone at Datta Khel in North Waziristan in which 24 people were killed and many more injured.  Amirpuri writes that the world is aware of what America is doing in Northern areas of Pakistan where civilians are being killed but Pakistan’s leadership is silent. If someone thinks that it was government policy which has stopped America from massive and direct aggression against Pakistan, they would be wrong. The fact that Pakistan is a nuclear power has stopped America from attacking Pakistan. Amirpuri dubs inflation, unemployment, load shedding and hike in gas and oil prices as drone attacks from Pakistan government which have made life difficult for poor people. (Al Qalam Weekly, 31 August-6 September)
