Pak Urdu Media Digest – July 12

While Nawaz Sharif is busy putting together a Grand Opposition Alliance (GAP), PTI chief Imran Khan appears to be busy in his own alliance politics, going by Nawa-i-Waqt which is known to be close to the Sharif brothers. Former foreign minister S M Qureshi is desperate for a foot-hold in the political arena. If Imran and Qureshi emerge as the magnet, Pakistan could the see the birth of a new moderate mainstream party as an alternative to PPP and PML (N). Practically all the conservative Urdu newspapers have welcome the suspension of US military aid as an opportunity to shake off US yoke.

CHINA
1.A high level meeting between the Pakistan military and China was held last month and it followed China’s assurance that it will provide Pakistan with aggressive support in case it is blacklisted by the international community. (Jinnah)

INDIA

1.Former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf said while speaking in a function in Houston that if miscreants succeed to destabilize Pakistan than their next target will be India. (Urdu Point)   

UNITED STATES

1.Defence Minister Chaudhary Ahmed Mukhtar has said that if America withdraws $800 million of military aid that Pakistan has already spent on fighting terrorists then Pakistan will not have any other option but to withdraw it forces from the Afghan border. 2. Editorials on suspension of US military aid said it is an opportunity for Pakistan to break free from the U.S. Former diplomats Maliha Lodhi, Javed Hussain and Iqbal Ahmed Khan, former finance minister Salman Shah, and JI chief Hassan expressed the same view. 3. Writing in Jasarat, Arif Bahar criticizes the meeting on homosexuality held at the U.S. embassy and says America complains that the Taliban and Al Qaeda are trying to force their culture upon western society but it is actually America that is imposing its belief system on Pakistan and the meeting on homosexuality is a prime example. 4. Reacting to Nawa-i-Waqt’s editorial about USA conspiring to set up Jewish Townships in J&K; the spokesperson of the US consulate in Pakistan said that the editorial is against facts and the USA has never tried to set up a Jewish state in J&K. (Nawa-i-Waqt)


AFGHANISTAN

1.Spokesperson for the Foreign Office Tehmina Janjua has rejected allegations that Pakistan has fired missiles into Afghanistan, stating that it is the work of miscreants who want to start riots along the bordering areas. (Jasarat)

2. Certain foreign diplomats in America have expressed regret over the U.S. suspension of military aid to Pakistan. The move would widen the gap between the US and Pakistan and Pakistan will tilt towards China. They added that the aid cut decision was also not fair considering the situation in Afghanistan either. PAK ARMY

1. ISPR has rejected the claim by an Indian website that hackers have hacked into ISI chief Shujaa Pasha’s g-mail account. (Jasarat)

2.Pakistan has purchased mortar system, potable rocket launchers and automatic grenade launchers and other light weapons worth $10 crore in 2008 but Pakistan has not provided this data to the UN Register of Conventional Arms in 2009. (Daily Pak)


POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS

1.PPP and MQM have called off several meetings planned to defame each another after intervention by ‘influential forces’ in the establishment. (Kawish)

2.In Jang, Nazir Naji writes grand opposition alliance is difficult to maintain and points out that there was a time when GHQ was responsible for making and breaking of political alliances.  (Jang)

3. PTI chief Imran Khan, a prominent politician and disgruntled leaders of two other major political parties are considering the formation of a new party. They have been discussing the proposal for a few months by now but have not progressed beyond the discussion stage. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

4. The PPP Sindh parliamentary party has said that in case there is no positive response from MQM within the next 48 hours, resignations of the MQM would be accepted. (Kawish)

5. PML-N is in a dilemma on whether to continue support of the MQM as it has now decided to oppose the Sindh government’s Commissionerate System in the National Assembly (Parliament). (Kawish)

6.Ch. Shujaat Hussain could become Minister for Overseas Affairs; he may also get his old portfolio of Manpower and Labour. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

7.Jinnah edit has commended the decision of PM Gilani’s daughter Fiza to work for the welfare of women. The daily said there is a need for sincere leaders who give importance to national interests rather than personal interests. (Jinnah Edit)

KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWAH (NWFP/FATA)

1. 3,000 foreign militants from Arab countries, Central Asia and Afghanistan are present in the tribal areas, says FATA Chief Secretary, Fazal Kareem Khatak. (Jang)

PUNJAB

1.Interior Ministry in Punjab has asked the police to beef up security after receiving information that nine terrorists have entered Lahore and they might target the US consulates, governor’s house, Badshahi Masjid, Data Darbar, Masjid-e-Shahuhda, Punjab assembly and other sensitive buildings. (Khabrain)

2.Punjab government has informed the Lahore High Court that political and religious parties have been banned from holding rallies and gatherings at Mall road. The court was also told that Nasir Bagh and Atiq Stadium have been reserved for such rallies. (Daily Pak)

3.World Bank has agreed to give $30 crore aid to Punjab for agriculture development and irrigation system. (Daily Pak)


SINDH

1. A decision has been taken by security forces in Karachi to carry out search operations at night to recover illegal weapons and arrest those involved in target killings. (Jasarat)

2. Senior Minister of Sindh, Zulfikar Mirza, has instructed authorities to shift political prisoners currently lodged in the Karachi Central Jail to other jails in the province in order to break the networks they have established. Already 25 political prisoners have been shifted out. There are 400 political workers lodged in the Central Jail, Karachi and they all will be shifted to other jails under Mirza’s advice. (Jasarat)

3. Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said that the telephone lines at MQM headquarters must have disconnected due to technical reasons and the PPP has nothing to do with it. (Ibrat)

4. Jiye Sindh Quami Mahaz has taken out protest rallies across Sindh against atrocities committed by the PPP Peace committee on Kachhi youth. (Ibrat)

5.Aijaz Jamali writes in Ibrat that the people of Liyari are hoping that after the pull out of MQM support, their area will be declared a district within Karachi. (Ibrat)


POK NEWS

1.AJK PM Sardar Ateeq Ahmed Khan and MQM Chief Altaf Hussain have jointly demanded a cancellation of AJK assembly elections and said fresh elections should be held under the supervision of the Pakistan army and a new election commission. They added that irregularities in the voters list should be removed in two months time and then a fresh poll should be held. (Ausaf, 11 July)
