Recount confirms Ahmadinejad as Iran’s President

Iran’s Guardian Council confirmed the validity of the June 12 election of President Ahmadinejad on Monday evening after a recount of ten percent of the votes across the country.

The recount took place in front of national TV cameras, Teheran Times reported. The ballot boxes were chosen at random.

The ‘fresh’ result has disproved complaints of irregularities by defeated presidential candidates Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mahdi Karroubi and leaves them with few options.

‘The secretary of the Guardian Council, in a letter to the interior minister, announced the final decision of the Council … and declares the approval of the accuracy of the results of … the presidential election’, state broadcaster IRIB said.

‘The Guardian Council approval of the vote negates the possibility of an election re-run’, Iran’s English-language Press TV television station said.
