Wanni War Over, says SL President

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa Saturday (May 16) declared that the army defeated the LTTE.

‘The Wanni War is over’, he said in a statement from Amman where he is attending G-11 summit.  He said the Sri Lankan armed forces had finally defeated the rebel group after 25 years of civil war.

Through out Saturday there was intense media speculation that the LTTE chief had been eliminated. He was believed killed in the intense fighting that has been raging since Friday.

While there was no official word, reports said two army divisions marching captured the last strip of the coastline held by the LTTE and killed many Tigers. The sea escape route has been cut off and the rebels are cornered in a 1.5 sq km territory encircled by the security forces.

Only on Friday, May 15, President Rajapaksa vowed to stamp out the Tigers within 48-hours.

Prabhakaran was inflicted a day earlier a big blow when Sea Tigers’ chief and confidant Thillaiyampalam Sivanesan alias Soosai was nabbed by the Lanka Navy along with his family off Mullaitivu coast as they were trying to flee.
