Ceasefir violated 139 times

Pakistan has violated cease-fire agreement along the International Border (IB) and the Line of Control (LoC) 139 times during the last three years and 485 militants had tried to infiltrate into J&K last year alone, defence minister A K Antony said (Mar 15)

14 cease-fire violations took place along the IB and 125 violations along the LOC between 2007 and 2009. While 77 violations along the LoC took place in 2008, their number was 27 last year.
Antony said as per assessment of Multi Agency Centre, 485 terrorists had attempted to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir in 2009. The Defence Minister on March 17 said that Pakistan has 42 terror camps within its territory.

The Army Chief General Deepak Kapoor said around 250-300 terrorists are poised for infiltration across the LoC. (Daily Excelsior, Mar 16).

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said: ‘One worrying aspect of the security scenario is that the net infiltration has increased by above 98 per cent during 2009 as compared to the year 2008’. He added that about 550-575 militants were presently active in the State.

The composition of militancy continues to be dominated by foreigners — of the 398 militants killed 304 were foreigners, making it 76 per cent of total militants killed in the valley in 2008-09, according to Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir zone) Farooq Ahmad.

Most of the foreign militants in Kashmir had come from North Western Frontier Province (NWFP), Punjab, and Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Out of 237 militants killed during 2008, 171 were foreigners and in 2009 of the 161 militants killed 133 were foreigners. This year so far, 21 militants, five of them foreigners, were killed (The Hindu, Mar 19)
