Iran clerics blink, call for talks

Iran’s top legislative body, the 12-member Guardian Council, has invited the three losers in the presidential poll to discuss their complaints on Saturday amidst continued street protests in Tehran.

Supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi in particular hotly dispute ‘the second term’ to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and charge that the June 12 vote was rigged. Mousavi wants the vote annulled and held again. Ahmadinejad ‘won’ nearly 63% of the vote against 34% for his closest rival, Mousavi.

‘Mousavi and fellow-losers Mehdi Karoubi and Mohsen Rezaie could raise their problems at an extraordinary council meeting on Saturday’, a spokesman for the 12-member Guardian Council Abbasali Kadkhodai said.

The Council has received 646 complaints and has begun examining them carefully, he added ruling out a re-poll.
