JEI demos across B’desh

Jamaat-e-Islami (JEI) held demonstrations across Bangladesh under different banners against the Govt’s move to ban Islam based political parties.

Processions were taken out in Dhaka from the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque (Jan15) after the Jumma prayers, protesting the move to restore the 1972 Constitution which will automatically imply ban on religion based political parties.

On the same day addressing a meeting organized by Shramik Kalyan Federation, JEI labour front in Dhaka, JEI Amir, Matiur Rahman Nizami, called upon people to rise in revolt against the ‘conspiracy’ to ban Islam based political organizations, saying that the people of Bangladesh, which is the second largest Muslim country, will never take kindly to any such ‘heinous conspiracy’.

The government plans are a sequel to the Supreme Court ruling that religion based political parties are unconstitutional, a report in the Bangladesh Today said on Jan 16.

JMB activists lathicharged

Activists of the Jamiatul Mujahideen Bangladesh were lathicharged at a Nilphamari court as hearing was taking in a case against JMB that it conspired to keep people away from the 2008 Parliamentary elections.

Prosecution alleged that the JMB tried to motivate the people into launching jihad to establish Allah’s rule in Bangladesh. JMB cadres sent leaflets and CDs through courier services to various districts as a part of its campaign against the vote.

Police seized JMB’s training manuals, photos of different parts of AK-47 rifle, assault rifle, books on jihad, lethal weapons, CDs and leaflets in raids carried out at different places in northern districts,  Daily Star reported on Jan 13.
