Most editorials have endorsed the government reaction to NATO attacks and called for steps to protect Pakistan’s core interests. Some edits have advised Islamabad to resist the temptation to precipitate matters and handle the situation through diplomatic channels. A report in the Khabrain says Imran Khan’s party could be funded by the establishment, which means the army and secret agencies. .

AFGHANISTAN
Daily Pak edit on Pakistan boycotting the Bonn Conference says once Pakistan has registered its protest, there would be no harm in attending the Bonn conference. Edit writes that Pakistan could not survive in isolation and the Bonn conference was meant to establish stability in Afghanistan, which was in Pakistan’s interest. (Daily Pak Edit)

INDIA
An  Indian secret agency has reported that Pakistan’s relations with America would strain further and America would try in Pakistan the same policy it adopted in Egypt or Libya. (Jang)

Former AJK PM, Sardar Atiq Ahmed Khan said that India was blocking Pakistan’s economy as a matter of policy. (Baad-e-Shimal)

UNITED STATES
Former ISI chief, Gen Hamid Gul has said that US attitude appeared to have changed after Pakistan‘s decision to stop Nato supply line. He said that taking advantage of this historical situation, Pakistan should take more steps or else the opportunity will be lost. He stated that CIA personnel should be ousted from Pakistan. Muslim Conference Central Chief Fida Hussein Kayani condemned the NATO attack on Pakistani army posts and said that Kashmiris were with the Pakistan Army. (Daily Dharti)

Ishfaq Azar writes: NATO attack has accentuated the need for short term and long term measures. In the short term, there can be investigations into the matter and in the long term, nation can be told the full truth. The leadership now needs to give thought to whether Pakistan is being isolated because of strategic support being given by the establishment to fundamentalists and Taliban elements. These elements were opposed by the world including the Pakistan’s neighbours. (Kawish)

Ausaf Edit says people want the government to boycott the Bonn conference, oust American troops and agents from Pakistan and end diplomatic ties with America. (Ausaf Edit, 30 November)

Daily Intekhab editorial has welcomed Pakistan’s decision to stop NATO’s supplies and to give notice to the US for vacating the Shamsi Air Base. America was worried with the increasing power of China. Americans wanted to bring on the one hand Pakistan and India together against the Sino-Russia alliance and on the other hand to use Pakistan to spread unrest in China by provoking Muslims in China during the Xingjian riots (Daily Intekhab Edit)

A JuD meeting presided over Hafiz Saeed announced that a nationwide protest would be staged on Friday against NATO aggression. All party leaders from the centre and provinces were instructed to hold protests in each city in Pakistan. A big rally under the Dafa-e- Pakistan Council was planned for December 18th at Minar-e- Pakistan Ground, where all religious and political leaders, Kashmiri leaders and military experts would gather. Hamid Mir in his column condemns the Mohmand attack and criticizes America for not apologizing for the same. Although Pakistan had stopped NATO’s supply line, it was important to remember that America was looking for alternate supply routes from Tajik or Uzbek areas and if those supply routes were opened, America would be in a better position to build its permanent army posts in Afghanistan.  Mir further states that during the Istanbul Conference, Afghan President Hamid Karzai had told COAS Gen. Kayani that Afghanistan would support Pakistan in case of an American attack and that the Pakistan government’s pro-Indian policies were against Pakistan’s interest in Afghanistan .Karzai also told Kayani that Kabul was not ready to allow training of the Afghan Army in Pakistan. Mir writes that America somehow wants to establish itself in the region to take control of oil reserves and hence to defeat America, it was important to end internal and regional disputes. (Jang)

Al Qalam Weekly says in its edit that the NATO attack was deliberate and therefore it could not be pardoned. ISPR spokesperson had claimed that 72 Pak army personnel and more than 250 youths were killed in seven to eight NATO attacks in last three years and this revelation has increased the worry and anger of the common man.  Edit writes that NATO and America had not taken this incident seriously as they were trying to hold Pakistan responsible for it and demanded Pakistan’s cooperation for monetary aid from Washington. Political leadership and Army must get out of American slavery and if they failed to do so they would not have to right to talk about ‘national security’. (Al Qalam Weekly Edit, 2-8 December)

Ibrat edit says Pakistan made a U-turn in its policies on Kashmir and Afghanistan after 9/11. These policies were handed down from Zia era. Pakistan-US relations were the need of the hour not only for Pakistan but also for its neighbour’s growth. In light of these facts, the daily urges recourse to diplomatic measures and not taking matter beyond that. (Ibrat)

Nawa-i-Waqt editorial seconded cable operators’ decision to ban BBC TV channel for its anti-Pakistan propaganda and as a warning to other channels. It urged cable operators to take steps to stop spreading of Indian culture through TV programs. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
Police has been  falsely implicating innocent people as extremists and that a person Muhammad Munir who was working for a private TV channel was abducted two weeks ago, who the Special Investigation Unit was now claiming was a member of Jundullah. (Jasarat)

Addressing a youth convention in connection with Muharram in Puthi Bala near Rawalakot, a young religious scholar Allama Sajjad Khan said jihad is the only way to establish real Islam in the world and soon the time would come when people would thrash wrongdoers. (Daily Dharti)

Saadi writes that Pakistan’s politicians were looting the citizens, and if they did not gain power, they became the lackeys of US and India. Such politicians accuse their former party of corruption and join new parties. They build their villas abroad where their children live, and when things are in their favour they come back to Pakistan. If they get elected they start praising the US and India. He writes that politicians could not change Pakistan. (Al Qalam Weekly, 2-8 December)

POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS
JuI (F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman hailed the Government’s decision cut off NATO’s supply and get the Shamsi Airbase vacated. He said that JuI (F) would protest on Friday. (Daily Pak)

Following the 18th Amendment, the federal government decided to hold onto lucrative portfolios, says Shakeel Naik. The provincial governments are being asked to share the deficit of 18 loss-making units with the federal government, irking the provincial governments. The burden the provincial governments are being asked share belong to federal portfolios  of   railways, power,  ports, all regulatory bodies, all bodies relating to monitoring of public welfare projects, medical and other services and reforms in all law-enforcement bodies amongst other portfolios. Earlier, these portfolios used to fall in the Concurrent list but following 18th Amendment, these portfolios are being shown under a new category known as Federal Legislative list. (Awami Awaz)

In a TV interview, PPP senior Aitzaz Ahsan said he is impressed by Imran Khan; he lashed out against Shah Mehmood Qureshi. (Ibrat)

Nawa-i-Waqt editorial agrees with the views of Muslim League senior Ejaz-ul Haq that all ML factions were not able to unite because of ego clashes of leaders. It urges ML leaders to set aside personal interests and reunite the ML in the national interests. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

Irfan Siddiqui in his column criticizes Imran Khan for misleading people in the name of revolution. Khan was a member of the Public Accounts Committee during the reign of Musharraf but did nothing against corruption. He was a member of the Kashmir Committee but nobody knows if he had tried anything to solve the Kashmir issue. It would shock many if they knew the members of PTI. Imran Khan was working on the policy of ‘Beat them, don’t join them and if you can’t beat them, join them’. Siddiqui writes that Imran Khan had joined the stakeholders of the status quo. (Jang)

ECONOMY-WATER- ENERGY
State Bank of Pakistan has said that the government by taking Rs. 317 billion in loans has put economy in great danger. (Jang, Awami Awaz)

Nawa-i-Waqt editorial on Friends of Democratic Pakistan’s Water Task Force says that instead of recommending a special levy on electricity and irrigation sectors, international debtors who might include World Bank and IMF must have advised Pakistan to build the Kalabagh dam. Edit writes that it is true that to overcome the energy crisis and to combat India’s water aggression and promote economic and agricultural development, the Kalabagh dam could be the only solution. Political elements have promoted the Indian agenda by making the Kalabagh dam a controversial issue. Edit states that that if the Kalabagh dam had been built, then India releasing excess water would not have caused floods in KP. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

PUNJAB
Punjab Government has failed to complete mega projects it had unveiled with a flourish. As many as 372 road projects besides many buildings have not been completed. (Daily Pak)

SINDH
Premier Gilani directed the Sindh CM to consult MQM and other alliance partners on key issues. (Ibrat)

A police official at Thatta police station had been replaced for failure to get two Hindu sisters released from kidnappers. (Awami Awaz)

Syed Nawaz Shah of Jiye Sindh Mahaz said that killing of three Hindu doctors at Chak was part of a conspiracy to force Hindus leave Sindh. (Awami Awaz)

More than 50 activists from different socio-political groups have demanded bringing to book those behind killing of three Hindu doctors at Chak. Speaking at a meeting convened by Sindh Aman Forum at Sukkur, they also demanded giving protection to Hindus by taking action at a high level against the forced conversion of Hindu girls. (Awami Awaz)

Protests by Shahri Itihad entered its third day. This group has been demanding action against people harassing Hindu families at Tharari Mohabat. Jiye Sindh Qaumi Mahaz and Awami Tehreek are amongst the several social and nationalist groups taking part in the stir. (Awami Awaz)

Sindh government has asked police, rangers and three intelligence agencies to give detailed reports about missing persons. (Awami Awaz)

POK NEWS
AJK government has termed Poonch River as the most suitable place for fish harvesting and has put a ban on meshing of sand and stones from the river, which would be given on lease. (Daily Dharti)

Chaudhary Sardar Muhammad, senior leader of PPP (UK) and a close friend of former PM of AJK Barrister Mahmood Chaudhary requested the AJK cabinet to withdraw its decision about Lord Nazir. (Ausaf, 30 November)

A meeting of JKLF (UK) held to discuss the current situation and to evolve a new strategy, adopted a resolution criticising that Lord Nazir was declared as an unfavourable person. (Ausaf, 30 November)

G-B NEWS
Construction Minister, Bashir Ahmed Khan, met a delegation of the Diamer Youth Movement and assured them that corrupt staff of the PWD will be dealt with sternly and all incomplete projects will be completed. (Baad-e-Shimal)

Tausif Hasan, Central president of BNSO said that military forces do daily ‘nakabandi’ at various palaces in Gilgit City. He said that  some people disappeared during times of terrorist incidents. (Ausaf, 30 November)

GB CM inspected security arrangements in Gilgit city and checked all entry and exit points and check posts of police, rangers and scouts. (Baad-e-Shimal)

Contrary to the regular practice, this year no police security has been provided for Imam Bargah Khaseer Garkhor in Skardu, causing concern for the locals. (Baad-e-Shimal)


Admission policies of Karachi university are hostile to GB students who deserve special dispensation in view of their deprivation. The GB students should either be given special quota or the All Pakistan open merit system should be used in Karachi universities. (Baad-e-Shimal)

Baad-e-Shimal EDIT is critical of non-payment of dues to contractors who carried out restoration work in flood affected areas using their own funds. Edit is also critical that the government initially made announcement of providing jobs and loans to educated youth but all announcements remained just verbal promises and no action has been taken yet.
