Pak Urdu Media Digest – July 13

There was a general sense of ‘relief’ at the US decision to withdraw military aid to Pakistan with most commentators viewing the decision as an opportunity for Pakistan to assert its sovereignty. The army on its part has decided to mobilise all resources to raise its voice against America and its drone attacks. Gilgit- Baltistan is rocked by a scandal – the chief minister awarding a mineral exploration contract to a Chinese expatriate owned company with which his son was involved though he has authority to award such contracts.

UNITED STATES
1.Defence expert Ayesha Siddiqua says US accepted its failure to win over the hearts of Pakistani people through financial assistance. (Jasarat)

2.Editorials in Jang, Jasarat, Ummat, Nawa-i-Waqt and Khabrain have welcomed the US decision to withdraw of military aid to Pakistan saying that as a sovereign country, Pakistan can do without American military aid. A view was also expressed that the US having established a strong network within Pakistan no longer needs the cooperation of Pakistani officials in the war against terrorism. 3.Noor Rahim Haqqani writes in the Al Qalam Weekly: US and its cronies are not against Sharia rule in Pakistan as such but their target is Islamic system and Islamic values, which they are mocking. Even in the past Pakistani leaders planned and plotted against Islam at the behest of America but they have failed. Jihad will soon establish a rule of Islam on the entire world. 4.Former Pak Army Chief, Gen. (retd) Aslam Beg, said that Osama was dead two years ago and this entire ruse in Abbottabad was staged so that America can wage war on Pakistan. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

AFGHANISTAN

1.Pakistan’s minister for railways, Bashir Ahmad Bilour, said that Pakistan would help in establishing the railway system in Afghanistan. (Jang)

2.France has recalled 1,000 troops from Afghanistan. However 3,000 French troops will remain in the eastern Afghanistan (Daily Dharti)

INDIA
1.Leon Panetta, the new US Secretary of Defence and several high ranking American officials will be visiting New Delhi to work out India’s role since the US relations with Pakistan have deteriorated. (Jang)

2.Jasarat editorially criticises the American pressure on Pakistan to do more and takes offence to India’s statements that the withdrawal of US military aid to Pakistan will bring stability to the region. “In spite of this attitude Speaker of the National Assembly Fahimda Mirza has given India the status of favourite nation”. ARMY
1.Karachi Shipyard has begun manufacturing missile boats for Pakistan Navy, in a joint venture with China. The missile boats will be equipped with anti-surface missiles and automatic gun and weapon systems. (Baad-e-Shimal, Nawa-i-Waqt, Jinnah)

2.A corps commander conference held by army chief Kayani decided that Pakistan would not accept conditional aid from America and Pakistan voice will be raised against drone attacks from every possible platform. (Ibrat)

3. Supreme Court has issued orders to interrogate a particular intelligence agency official in connection with the missing persons’ cases and it also ordered DNA testing of those killed in the Lal Masjid operation. (Awami Awaz)

4. Former Sindh minister and Chief Organizer of the PML-F, Imtiaz Sheikh, has said that the Pakistani people are very much with their army. He also praised the decisions taken at the recent army corps commanders meeting. (Ibrat)

TERRORISM- EXTREMISM
1.The bomb disposal squad has reportedly denied Police claim that the blast at the Karal Chowk in Islamabad was a result of a gas cylinder explosion. ‘We did not find any evidence of this cylinder”. (Ibrat)

2.Religious and political leaders led by Tehreek Hurmat-e-Rasool have condemned caricatures of the prophet Mohammed in the news paper advertisements issued by the Ministry of human welfare; they also condemned ‘homosexual activities’ at the U.S. embassy saying that they consider such activities as an attack on Islam. POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS
1. PML-Q will be given two ministries in Sindh and Shujaat Hussain is expected to visit the MQM headquarters to woo Altaf Hussain back via telephone. (Ibrat)

2. MQM chief Altaf Hussain said that the government is not only ill-treating the MQM but it is also conspiring against the Pakistan army, ISI and other security agencies in collusion with America, (Ibrat)

3. PML-N has rolled back its decision to ally with the MQM. (Ummat)

4. The PML-F has joined the Sindh government and will receive three ministerial berths and one post of advisor. (Urdupoint)

ECONOMY/WATER
1. A joint resolution adopted by the Institute of Engineers claimed that not constructing the Kalabagh dam to generate hydel power would be like committing treachery. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

2.Bhasha Dam can not be considered a substitute for the Kalabagh Dam. (Editorial in Nawa-i-Waqt)

3.NEPRA chairman Khalid Saeed has said that load shedding could be reduced if the government provided the requested funds for infrastructure development. (Khabrain)

4.Awami Awaz editorial said: ‘If the unrest in Karachi continues unabated it can break the very backbone of the country’s economy.  Business suffers a loss of Rs. 10 billion from general strike just for one day in the city’.( Editorial in Awami Awaz)

KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWAH (NWFP/FATA)

1.300 people have died in 44 drone attacks during 2011. (Baad-e-Shimal)

PUNJAB

BALOCHISTAN

1.PM Gilani has extended an invitation to all Baloch leaders, within the country and abroad to engage in talks with the federal government. (Ibrat, Urdupoint)

2.For the first time in the history of Pakistan, the federal cabinet met at Quetta and took important decisions on issues related to Balochistan and the Aghaz-e-Haqooq Balochistan bill. (Jasarat)

3.In Nawa-i-Waqt, Sarwar Munir Rao has written about armed groups in Balochistan, their political affiliations, and their agenda. “Balochistan problems are not confined just to Pakistan but have the roots spread over Iran and Afghanistan”, he says. H writes that the leadership of the Secessionist movement in the three countries support four groups -Balochistan Liberation Army, Jandulla, Parari, National Liberation Front of Afghanistan and the Popular Front. Political parties or the groups involved in instigating or organizing these groups are Balochistan National Party, Jamhuri Watan Party, National Party, Balochistan National Movement, Baloch Republican Party, Baloch National Front, Baloch Peoples Party, Qalat State National Party, Balochistan Student Organization, and Awamy Party. They also have their own armed groups. According to Sarwar Munir Rao, the leaders who are leading these armed or political groups are: Gul Khan Baloch, Abdul Hai Baloch, Hamid Baloch, Ghulam Mohammed Baloch, Mir Nooruddin Mengal, Allah Nazar Baloch, Hasil Bezanjo, Brahamdagh Bugti, Prince Karim Agha Khan, Nawab Roz Khan, Abdul Aziz Kurd, Yusuf Aziz Magsi, Baloch Murri, Jumma khan Murri, Sher Mohd Murri, Akhtar Mengal, Ataullah Mengal, Abdul Malik Magsi and Dad Shah. “These facts indicate that the movements in Balochistan lack any central leadership and have different agendas. Therefore, the government will have to keep in mind their individual rather than collective interests while formulating a strategy to deal with them. The government will have to put the facts before the public and ban political parties from keeping private armies or Para-militaries”. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

SINDH
1.MQM Chief has asked Britain to tell Pakistan government not to release Afaq Ahmad stating that his release could spread bloodshed in Karachi. (Ummat)

2.PPP has taken alliance partners in the Sindh government into confidence about operations in Karachi. (Urdupoint)

3. The Sindh government has directed the anti-corruption unit to verify the accounts and records of former nazims and bureaucrats and submit a report within 15 days. (Ibrat)

4.PPP Leader Nabeel Gabol has demanded the deployment of Rangers in his Lyari constituency, saying that criminals from the Cut Mountain areas and Qasba Colony are now congregating there. (Jang)

5. Leaders of many Sindh nationalist groups have condemned the chaos in Karachi and said the Sindhis often fall prey to power struggle between the PPP and MQM. (Awami Awaz)

6.Jasarat editorially commented on provocative slogans on the walls of Karachi that call for creation of ‘Muhajiristan’ for Mohajirs. ‘This is clearly the work of MQM. The authorities should look into this. (Jasarat Edit)

7.Ummat has welcomed the revival of Police Commissionerate System. It held MQM responsible for spreading chaos in Karachi. The daily’s editorial is worried that power list might force the PPP to take back the MQM into the ruling coalition. (Ummat Edit)

8. Ibrat editorially voiced concern that while the attention of the security forces is focused on the urban areas of Sindh, rampant lawlessness in the interiors and rural Sindh is going unattended. (Ibrat Edit)

POK NEWS

1.Due to incorrect data collection and the misrepresentation of facts, the poverty survey conducted in 2010 to distribute aid to the poor under the Benazir Income Support program has accounted for families earning more than Rs.50, 000/- per month but does not cover families who earn less than Rs 10,000/- per month. (Baad-e-Shimal)

2.G-B chief minister has given mineral exploration contract to Mohsin industries in order to secure the interests of his son, who is involved with the Mohsin. The authority to award mineral exploration contracts rests with th G-B council and not with the Chief Minister. (edit in Baad-e-Shimal)

3.G-B Chief Minister Mehdi Shah is quick to criticize the contractors but before taking them to task he should have hauled up the government officials who take bribes from contractors and le them leave the works incomplete. (Editorial in Baad-e-Shimal)
