AFGHANISTAN
President Zardari has expressed concern over attacks from across the Afghanistan bounder on Pakistani security forces. He said that militant safe havens would have to be eliminated. (Ausaf, Urdupoint)

UNITED STATES
Claims made by the US with regard to Taliban Chief Mullah Omar, were a part of Obama’s electoral campaign. According to sources, the Taliban chief has not lost its administrative powers, nor is he in Pakistan. Gen. John Allen only tried to reduce his government’s troubles by such false statements. The US wanted to begin a civil war in Afghanistan by creating smaller groups but after the message given on Eid by Mullah Omar, such smaller groups have started dialogues with him. (Ummat)

Ummat criticizes the government for the fresh allegations against Pakistan that it was hiding Taliban Chief Mullah Omar and that he was sending his militants to Afghanistan for action against allied forces. The daily in its edit says that the US should simply accept its failure in getting control over Taliban and Mullah Omar and should stop torturing Pakistan in such cheap ways. (Ummat Edit)

DEFENCE
Defence Ministry has released photographs of 2 terrorists, involved in the Kamra airbase attack for the public to identify them. Both terrorists were killed in the attack. (Baad-e-Shimal)

Security forces have killed 22 militants in South Waziristan in retaliation to a militant attack on a check-post in which 10 security personnel were killed. Forces have hoisted the national flag at various places in South Waziristan. There were 100 militants when they attacked the security check-post in South Waziristan. Weapons recovered during the operation were identified as having been brought from Afghanistan. (Ausaf, Urdupoint, Jinnah, Khabrain)

Ausaf in its edit refers to the fighting between militants and security forces in Bajaur that has carried on for the past 5 days and writes that in the past, militants would escape to Kunar and Nuristan in Afghanistan, but this time, they had taken up positions in difficult mountainous areas. The daily adds this indicates that they had changed their strategy. This strategy could turn deadly in the future and advises the use of air force to deal with these militants. (Ausaf Edit)

In his column, Mohammad Zubair Khan comments that two attacks in a short span of time on the Mansehra Jail where Dr. Shakil Afridi is imprisoned could be to give an impression that he is not safe in the jail. Khan says there are no other major targets for terrorist in the jail. (Daily Hazara News)

TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
Difa-e-Pakistan Council Chairman Maulana Sami-ul-Haque said that the operation in North Waziristan was a conspiracy against the nation. He announced a DPC meeting on 10th September and an APC the next day. Haque said this at a luncheon meeting hosted by Gen. (Retd.) Hamid Gul. (Ummat, Jinnah)

Speaking at a seminar in Islamabad, Interior Advisor Rahman Malik said that if any high-ranking religious scholar takes an initiative to conduct talks with Taliban, he would accompany the scholar. He said that there was a conspiracy to spark sectarian violence to fuel propaganda that Pakistan’s nuclear weapons were unsafe. Malik said that he knew which Afghan Minister visited South Punjab with suitcases full of dollars and tried to spark a conflict between Sunnis and Barelvis. He also said that if Taliban did not mend its ways, it will be ruined and alleged that some foreign countries and NGOs were supporting militants to destabilize Pakistan. Addressing a function in Jamia Mujadadiya in Karachi, Mufti Muneeb, Abul Khair Zubari, and Sahabzada Peer Atiqur Rahman commented that the only way to a positive change in Pakistan was the imposition of Nizam-e-Mustafa in the country. (Ummat, Jang)

POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS
The Law Minister Farooq H. Naek made a secret visit to Switzerland as the cases against President Zardari in Swiss courts will complete their legal term in September 2012 and if the government writes to Swiss authorities post the completion of this term, nothing will happen.  Naek gave a detailed briefing to President Zardari about his visit. It has also been learnt that the government was seriously considering putting an end to its confrontation with the judiciary. (Khabrain, Kawish)

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira has lashed out at opposition leader Chaudhary Nissar for alleging that journalists were being bribed for a good press. He said that the opposition leader was trying to malign President Zardari with help of baseless accusations. (Ausaf)

PM Ashraf has taken notice of reports of corruption in plot allotment in Islamabad’s blue areas. (Ausaf)

PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has alleged that the government was trying to split Sindh, in the guise of creating more provinces out of Punjab. He said that PML-N will oppose these plans.   (Kawish)

Balochistan National Party has rejected the commission on new provinces. The BNP said it was not against creation of Saraiki province but some original Baloch areas such as Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore and Kandhkot would not be allowed to be included in the new province. These areas were included by the British included them in Sindh; hence, they should be merged into Balochistan once again. (Kawish)

A member of the Commission to set up new provinces Jamshed Dasti cautioned PML-N that if they resist the Saraiki province, anger against PML-N in this belt would be natural. He said that since the Punjab Assembly had already passed a resolution in favour of new provinces, it should not boycott the commission. He alleged Balochistan CM’s mental condition was not good. While speaking with the US Ambassador, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif said that the US should respect Pakistan’s sovereignty and resolve Dr. Afiya’s case. Bitterness in relations would reduce if this case were resolved. (Ausaf)

Daily Pak has criticised the Parliamentary Commission on formation of new provinces for holding its first meeting without quorum. Only nine out of 14 members were present.  The daily noted the objection of opposition leader Chaudhary Nissar Ali Khan that the Commission was formed only to split Punjab and Balochistan. Jang editorial discusses the chaos over the formation of new provinces and says that the resolution over new provinces in the Punjab Assembly was withheld and even the Balochistan CM Raeesani had called this idea as threat to Pakistan’s integrity. States reorganisation is a very sensitive and it needed proper planning and consensus. It is important that the government takes everyone into confidence before moving ahead. (Jang Edit)

Jinnah in another editorial expressed concern over opposition leader Chaudhary Nissar’s allegation that President Zardari was using journalists for poll-rigging in the upcoming elections. The daily called for an investigation into this allegation. (Jinnah Edit)

ECONOMY-WATER- ENERGY
Former Irrigation bureaucrat Idris Rajput says that recent rains may have had an impact in some areas, but did not significantly raise water levels. Based on current water levels, it can be deduced that Sindh will not witness floods this time. He says that officially the monsoon was still on until September 15th. Due to global warming, seasonal changes everywhere are resulting either in unseasonal rains or no rains even in monsoons. Rajput says that in 1992, there were no rains until August, but skies opened up in northern areas on September 7th and then, Sindh witnessed a huge flood. (Kawish)

KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWAH (NWFP/FATA)
Daily Hazara News is upset over the demand for Hazara province being kept out of New Provinces Commission’s agenda. It writes that the people of Hazara had made great sacrifices for Hazara province and for Pakistan, and if they still do not get justice, it could have grave implications. Sindh CM has expressed serious concern over Police and the law enforcement machinery having gone lax after Eid. He said that increased target killings in Karachi were an evidence of this. (Kawish)

Jiye Sindh Quami Mahaz took out a rally in Ghotki against the treatment of Hindus. JSQM chief Kalani appealed to Sindhi Hindus not to migrate to India and said that it would be his party’s responsibility to ensure their safety. (Ibrat)
